1900 Summer Olympics – Host City

The 1900 Summer Olympics, today formally known as the Games of the II Olympiad, was celebrated without any opening or closing ceremonies in 1900 in Paris, France. At the same time of the Olympic Games 1900, Paris was also hosting the World Exhibition, an international fair of huge size. The competitions were began on May 14 and ended on 28th October, 1900. The Games were held as part of the 1900 World's Fair. One thousand competitors took part in 19 different sports. Women took part in the games for the first time and Charlotte Cooper became the first female Olympic champion. The decision to hold competitions on a Sunday brought protests from many American athletes, who travelled as representatives of their colleges and were expected to withdraw rather than compete on their religious day of rest.

First Modern Olympic History 1896

French educator Baron Pierre de Coubertin wished for that the ancient games should be revived on an international scale. That was the 23 rd of June in 1894. International sports leaders from nine nations including the United States and Russia gathered at the Sorbonne in Paris. The idea of Coubertin was accepted and the Modern Olympics were born. Two years later, the first modern Olympics were held at the newly reconstructed Panathenaic Stadium in Athens in the year 1896.

There were 241 players from 14 nations competed in this Summer Games. The participating nations were Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Chile, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland and United States. Belgium and Russia had withdrawn their names from participation list. There was no woman participant and most of the participants were Greek.

The Events of the first Modern Olympics were track and field events like fencing, weightlifting, rifle and pistol shooting, tennis, cycling, swimming, gymnastics, and wrestling. Total 43 games were played in these 9 sports. Greece won the highest number of medals winning 46 medals in total. United States won 11 gold medals and became the winner of the first Modern Summer Games. Total medals won by United States were 20.

The Summer Games were held from 6th April to 15 th April. The games were officially opened by King George I of Greece in the Panathenaic Stadium filled with an estimated 80,000 spectators. The first modern-day Marathon was held on the 11th day of the games. This event was held to commemorate Ancient Summer Games. The race was run from Marathon to Athens . More than 100,000 peoples gathered to witness the historic event. The Summer Games reached their high point when a Greek runner, Spiridon Louis won the first Marathon race of the Modern Olympiad. The thrill of this victory added a spark to the Games' finale--the ceremonial march of the nations.

Olympic Movement Missions – Promotion Through Sports Development

To develop the sport and environment agenda, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has established a policy to provide greater resources to sustainable development in and through sport at all levels, and particularly at the Summer Games.

It is based on the principles mentioned in the Olympic Charter this policy has two main objectives; to promote Summer Games and to promote awareness of the importance of a healthy environment and sustainable development among the members of the Olympic family as well as the sports practitioners in general.

"More than ever, sport is a universal language and plays the role of catalyst in today's society as a means of improving quality of life and well-being”.

Olympic Movement Missions - Protection of Athletes

Protection of the athletes is one of the main priorities of the Olympic Movement. To ensure the protection of the athletes, The International Olympic Committee has taken various measures like creation of the IOC Athletes Commission, IOC Medical Commission, Court Arbitration for Sport (CAS), World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and World Olympians Association (WOA). The Medical Commission actively fights against doping and supports the protection of the athletes’ health.

The IOC Medical Commission was created by the International Olympic Committee in 1967, in order to deal with the increasing problem of doping in the sports world with the following three fundamental principals; protection of the athletes health, respect for both medical and sports ethics and equality for all competing athletes.

The IOC Medical Commission is fighting against doping for more than 40 years. In addition to the ongoing fight Medical Commission is studying alternative methods to help athletes. These alternatives consist of sport medicine, biomechanics, physiology applied to sports, nutrition and all the other sciences linked to sports. Not only this, the IOC has made it sure that the host cities of the Summer Games must take necessary measures of environmental protection during the games.

Olympic Movement Missions - Promotion of Women in Sports

The Summer Games involve a number of organizations, the three major organizations are International Sports Federations (IFs), the National Olympic Committees (NOCs), the Organising Committees for the Olympic Games (OCOGs) and all other recognised federations, institutions and organisations. All these organizations are collectively known as the Olympic Movement.

The first objective of the Olympic Movement has always been to promote Olympism and develop sport worldwide. The International Olympic Committee is the head of the Olympic Movement and has always played a key role to promote women's participation in sport at all levels. The increasing number of women athletes in the Olympics is the result of the cooperation of the entire Olympic Movement and of the measures taken by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), International Federations (IFs) and National Olympic Committees (NOCs).

In the early years of the modern Olympics, women were not well represented. Women first competed at the 1900 Paris Games. Eleven women are allowed to compete in lawn tennis and golf. The first woman to win an Olympic event was England's Charlotte Cooper, who won the tennis singles in 1900. Over time passed more women events were added, and currently Boxing is the only Summer Olympic sport that does not include events for women, though this is set to change in London Olympic Games 2012.

Summer Olympic Games are major international event consists of summer and winter sports. Olympic Games are two seasonal games with Summer Olympic and Winter Olympic Games. Both these games take place every four years. Olympic Games are currently held every two years, with Summer Olympic and Winter Olympic Games alternating, although they occur every four years within their respective seasonal games. The Summer Games are the exclusive property of the Olympic Movement.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) owns all rights relating to the Summer Games. The IOC had rights relating to their organization, exploitation, broadcasting and reproduction. The IOC is the final authority to decide anything concerning the Summer Games. All profits derived from the Summer Games are used for the development of the Olympic Movement and of sport.
