In the early years of the modern Olympics, women were not well represented. Women first competed at the 1900 Paris Games. Eleven women are allowed to compete in lawn tennis and golf. The first woman to win an Olympic event was England's Charlotte Cooper, who won the tennis singles in 1900. Over time passed more women events were added, and currently Boxing is the only Summer Olympic sport that does not include events for women, though this is set to change in London Olympic Games 2012.

Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin
The brainchild of Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin, the Olympic Movement and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) were officially established on 23 June 1894 at the Paris International Congress that was organised by Coubertin at the Sorbonne. Coubertin is also the author of the famous phrase which characterises the Olympic Games: “The important thing in life is not the triumph, but the fight; the essential thing is not to have won, but to have fought well.” The host cities for both the first and second editions of the modern Olympic Games were quickly agreed upon during this Congress Athens for 1896 Olympic Games and Paris for 1900 Olympic Games.

The development and governance of the modern Olympic Games are vested in the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The original committee had included a total of 15 member, but the number today is currently 113, including the President and the Executive Board. These individuals are considered ambassadors from the committee to their national sports organizations and are dedicated to promoting amateur athletics. Normally there is only one member from each country. Presidents of the IOC are elected for an eight-year term and eligible for succeeding four-year terms.

Each country sending teams to the games must have its own National Olympic Committee. By 1988 there were 167 such committees. One responsibility of a national committee is arranging for its team's participation in the games, providing equipment, and getting the team to the game site and into specially arranged housing.

The best amateur athletes in the world match skill and endurance in a series of contests called the Olympic Games. Almost every nation sends teams of selected athletes to take part. The purposes of the Olympic Games are to foster the ideal of a "sound mind in a sound body" and to promote friendship among nations.

The Greeks were the first to start the Summer Games in 776 BC in the plains of Olympia in Peloponnese. The ancient Summer Games grew and continued to be played every four years for nearly 1200 years. In 394 AD, the Christian Byzantine Emperor Theodosius banned the Olympic Games because of their pagan connection. The successful campaign to revive the Olympic Games was started in France by a young Frenchman Baron Pierre de Coubertin in the late 19th century. The first of the modern Summer Games opened on Sunday, March 24, 1896, in Athens, Greece.

Olympic Games originally included only one event, the stadion race, which was a short sprint measuring between 180 and 240 meters. Over the years, more events were added including boxing, wrestling, chariot racing, pentathlon, wrestling; long jump, javelin throw and discus throw among others.

International Olympic Committee (IOC) is the governing body of the Olympic Games, was founded in Paris in 1894. International Olympic Committee headquarters are in Lausanne and Switzerland. Demetrious Vikelas from Greece was its first president. The original committee had 15 individuals, but the number today is currently 113, including the President and the Executive Board. At present, the IOC also has 28 honorary members and one honour member.

The Olympic flag was adopted in 1914 and was first used in the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium. The flag depicts five interlocking rings (blue, yellow, black, green, and red) against a white background. These rings represent the five inhabited continents Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia and Europe.

The Winter Games were added in 1924. Winter Games include sports are skating, skiing, bobsledding, luge, tobogganing, ice hockey, and the biathlon (skiing-shooting). World War I and World War II forced cancellation of the Olympics in 1916, 1940, and 1944, but they resumed in 1948 and are held every four years. After 1992 the Winter Games and Summer Games were no longer held within the same calendar year. Winter Games were scheduled for 1994, after only a two-year interval, and every four years thereafter. Olympic History – Ancient to Modern Olympics

Olympic Games are major international event consists of summer and winter sports. In Olympic Games thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions. The Olympic Games have come to be regarded as the world’s best sports competition where two hundred plus nations participate. Olympic Games are two seasonal games with Summer Olympic and Winter Olympic Games. Olympic Games are currently held every two years, with Summer Olympic and Winter Olympic Games alternating, although they occur every four years within their respective seasonal games. Next Summer Games will be held in London, in the year 2012.

Olympic History – Ancient to Modern Olympics

Ancient Olympic Games were held every four years in the valley of Olympia in southwestern Greece in 776 B.C. A flame was lit at the altar of Zeus to mark the opening of the Games, which was extinguished on the completion of the Games. According to legend, the first foot race for the athletes was held at Olympia in Western Peloponnese for the first time in 776 B.C in honor of their Greek God Zeus. The victor was crowned with a wreath of wild olive and was granted special honors in their home city.

As the games were held in Olympia, it came to be known as the Olympic Games. From the sole stade race the Olympic Games progressed to include events such as wrestling, boxing, pankration, equestrian events and pentathlon (jumping, running, javelin, discuss and wrestling) as evident from the Olympic history.. The last recorded champion was Varasdates, who won the boxing competition in 369 A.D. After that Emperor Theodosius abolished the Games as he considered them pagan.

Olympia
After being held for around 1100 years, the Olympic Games would be dormant for the next 1525 years. In order that the athletic events, which were popular in various countries and to transform the notion of rivalry into noble competition, free from profit, it was decided to make, "competitions at regular periodic intervals at which representatives of all countries and all the sports would be invited under the aegis of the same authority, which would impact to them a halo of grandeur and glory, that is the patronage of classical antiquity. To do this was to revive the Olympic Game." (Quoted by Baron Pierre de Coubertin).
Baron Pierre de Coubertin of France was the person who possessed the perseverance and the organizational skills necessary to revive the Games. In 1890, he organized and founded a sports organization, Union des Sociétés Francaises de Sports Athlétiques (USFSA). In 1892 at an international sports conference, he proposed the renewal of the Olympic Games, but it was rejected.

On 23rd June 1894, Coubertin gathered 79 delegates from 49 organizations representing nine countries in an auditorium which was decorated by neoclassical murals. At this meeting Coubertin eloquently spoke of the revival of the Olympic Games. The delegates at the conference voted unanimously for the Olympic Games. The delegates also decided to have Coubertin construct an international committee to organize the Games. This committee became the International Olympic Committee (IOC) 23 June 1894 and Demetrious Vikelas from Greece was selected to be its first president. Initially Coubertin suggested that the first Games be staged in his hometown of Paris in 1900. However, Greek support for the Games was so enthusiastic that the date was moved up to 1896 and the site shifted to Athens. Athens was chosen as the location for the revival of the Olympic Games and the planning was begun.

Ancient Summer Olympic - History

Ancient Summer Olympic Games were first recorded in 776 BC. According to some scholars, the games originated at least a century before that, possibly in the 13th century BC. The Games were held every four years. The Greek calendar was based on the four-year periods called Olympiads. Every Olympiad began with the Summer Games. Evidently, the festival of Olympics was reorganized in 776 BC. This Olympics was considered as the start of the first Olympiad.

Ancient Summer Olympic Games had many myths. One Greek legend said that the great Hercules was the founder of the Summer Games. Another myth said that Zeus himself had originated the festival to celebrate his victory against Cronus. The most common story is that, Olympic festival was a local religious event until 884 BC. Ancient Summer Olympic Games were basically a religious festival celebrated by all Hellenes, to worship Zeus. Iphitos, the king of Elis, decided to turn the Olympic festival into a broader, pan-Hellenic festival. For this reason, he entered into a temporary truce with other rulers to give the athletes and others a free passage to and from Olympia during the Summer Games. The winners of the Games were crowned with wreaths from olive tree. They marched around the grove while admirers chanted songs written by a prominent poet.

Ancient Summer Olympic Games were never suspended. Ancient Summer Olympic Games were even held during the Persian Wars in 480 BC, and coincided with the Battle of Thermopylae. Arkadians captured the sanctuary and reorganized the games in 364 BC. So the Ancient Summer Olympic Games held in 364 BC were not considered as Summer Games. In 338 BC, Philip of Macedon and his son Alexander took over the Greek city-states. They erected the Philippeion (a family memorial) in the sanctuary. Philip and Alexander held political meetings at Olympia during each Olympiad. In 146 BC, the Romans gained control of Greece and the Summer Games. In 85 BC, Sulla, the Roman general plundered the sanctuary to finance his campaign against Mithridates. Sulla also moved the 175th Olympiad to Rome in 80 BC. The ancient Summer Games lasted for 1170 years. Christian Byzantine Emperor Theodosius I ordered a banning of the Ancient Summer Games in 393 AD.

Ancient Summer Olympic Games were held in Olympia. The ancient city of Olympia is located in the western part of the Peloponnese. In the 10th century B.C, Olympia was the meeting place for worship and other religious and political practices. The majestic temple of Zeus dominated the central part of Olympia, with the temple of Hera parallel to it. The ancient stadium in Olympia had a capacity of 40,000 spectators.

Late in the 19th century, the campaign to revive the Olympics was started by Baron Pierre de Coubertin in France. The first of the modern Summer Games were held in 1896, in Athens, Greece.

Olympic – Olympic Games Origin Importance

From the very beginning, the games at Olympia served as a bond between Greeks. The games also strengthened the Greek sense of national unity. Ancient Greeks were highly competitive and their ultimate goal was to be the best. All aspects of life, especially athletics centered round this concept. So it was a great honor for a Greek to win a victory in Olympiad, even if there was no material reward for winning. Olympic Games were closely connected to worship in Greece.

Olympic Games were held as a part of the religious ceremonies in honor of heroes. Olympic Games were also a part of many ancient fertility festivals. The Greek calendar was based on the concept of the four year Olympiad. Every event was referred to in respect of the years between the two consecutive Olympic Games. Messengers known as the "spondorophoroi" carried the word of the sacred truce and the dates of the Olympic Games throughout Greece. All hostilities were ceased in the country to give a safe passage to the athletes to and from Olympia.

Olympic - Olympic Games Origin Myths

Olympic Games Origin has several myths. Most common myth is the story of the hero Pelops, a prince from Lydia in Asia Minor. The prince was a suitor of Hippodamia, the daughter of King Oinomaos of Pisa. Oinomaos announced that the suitor who would beat him in a chariot race could have Hippodamia as a wife. Pelops cheated Oinomaos in the race with the help of his charioteer, Myrtilos. Then after marrying Hippodamia , he instituted Summer Games to celebrate his victory. The other version of the myth tells the Summer Games to be the funeral games to be staged in the memory of Oinomaos.

Another myth about the origin of the Olympic Games is derived from the Tenth Olympian Ode of the poet Pindar. This is the story of Hercules, who is considered to be the founder of the Summer Games. The story tells that, King Augeas of Elis appointed Hercules to clean his stables with a promise to pay him the price of one-tenth of his cattle. The king did not keep his promise. Returning to Elis, Hercules fought against Augeas and won the city. After the victory, he instituted the Summer Games in honor of his father Zeus. It is said that Hercules taught men to wrestle and measured the length of the stadium.

Olympic - Olympic Games Origin

Olympic Games were first held in the year 776 BC at the wooded valley of Olympia in Elis, Greece . A gap of four years was maintained between two consecutive Games with Summer and Winter Olympic Games alternating, although they occur every four years within their respective seasonal games. In Elis , temples and statues were built in a grove dedicated to the supreme god Zeus . An ivory and gold statue of Zeus created by Phidias , the sculptor was the greatest shrine.

According to some scholars, 776 BC Olympics were not the first games. Actually, it was the first Olympic after the Olympics were organized into festivals to be held every four years as a result of the peace agreement between the city states of Elis and Pisa . The people of Elis traced the founding of the Summer Games to King Iphitos . It is said that Delphi Oracle told King Iphitos to plant the olive tree from which winners' wreaths were made.
